Six persons, including the OIC of the Nortonbridge Traffic Police, have been remanded till March 02 after being arrested by the Ahungalla Police for allegedly soliciting a ransom of Rs. 1 million from the Chief monk of the Balapitiya Pathegama Yogashrama Thera.
The order was issued by Balapitiya Magistrate Charitha Jayampathi Hansadeva Samaradiwakara.
The suspects were produced before the Balapitiya Magistrate on the 19th and remanded for 24 hours by the Ahungalla Police.
Six persons, including the OIC of the Nortonbridge Police Traffic Division and a member of the Galle Pradeshiya Sabha were remanded.
Police investigations have revealed that a group of police officers from the special unit of the Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon had come on the 17th at around 9.30 pm and demanded a ransom of Rs. 1 million from the Chief Incumbent.
The suspects were arrested in the Heenatiya area in Balapitiya on a tip off received by the police while the Chief monk was on his way to the bank to collect the money.
